What You Should Know About Shoes by Dave Bird
Everyone knows what shoes are, after all most of us do wear them. But how much do actually know about those things you walk about in everyday?
Well first off is the sole, it’s the very bottom of the shoe that the rest sits on. Then there’s the insole, the bottom of the inside of the shoe, the bit your foot actually rests on. Then there’s the outsole, the bottom of the outside of the shoe, the bit of the shoe that touches the ground, usually made of rubber or leather. Finally there’s the midsole, the bit between the insole and the outsole, only some shoes have one and they are usually for shock absorption.
The heel is quite an important part when it comes to women’s shoes. It is at the back of the shoe and is often higher than the rest of the sole. The upper is the part of the shoe that holds onto your foot, this can be a simple strap or something much more complex; it tends to be decorated to make the shoe look good.
The lateral refers to the outside of the shoes, including both the outsole and the upper parts of the shoe. This, for most people, is the most important part of the shoes as it is the part people see the most of. The inside of the shoe is known as the medial.
There are a lot of styles of shoes, with different styles for the different sexes. First off the male shoes are Oxfords, Derbys and Monk-straps. The female shoes are High heels, Kitten heels, Sneaker boots, Wedge sandals, Mules, Slingbacks, Espadrilles and Pumps. The unisex styles are Clogs, Platforms, Moccasins, Sandals, Slip-ons, Boat shoes, Boots and Slippers.
There are also styles specific to function as opposed to sex. There are athletic shoes such as Running, Track spikes, Cleats, Golf, Bowling, Climbing, Hiking, Walking, Ice skates, Roller skates, Inline skates, Ski boots, Skate shoes, Snowshoes and Wrestling shoes.
There are also many styles of dance shoes such as Pointe, Ballet, Ghillies, Jazz, Tango, Flamenco, Ballroom, Dance sneakers, Character shoes, Foot thongs and Tap shoes. There also work specific shoes, usually for protection in jobs such as construction and industrial where heavy items could fall and damage the foot.
Well it was by no means a detailed description of the shoe, but hopefully this gives you a little insight to something you take for granted.
