What Causes Obesity by JR Scott
What Causes Obesity and Some Other Questions Unanswered.
What causes obesity? Should be a simple enough question to answer right? Maybe not. I know it’s easy to jump on the obesity bashing bandwagon, to say obese people just eat too much and are lazy. That obese people don’t care about their health. Not only is that attitude hurtful and harsh it is generally not the case.
To those who feel the answer is that simple, can you look at someone and know their caloric intake for the day? By simply observing someone do you know how many calories they expend daily? Do you feel it is helpful to hurt someone who is obese or overweight? Is it possible that the answer is not always simple? One final question before you opened your mouth and criticized someone who is obese did you make sure your own self was in check?
Now on to some discussion about what causes obesity. There are a multitude of factors that contribute to obesity. Obesity research is actually discovering new causes of obesity and ways to combat them on a regular basis. It is true that overeating and under exercising does lead to obesity, but it is not that simple. Why can some people eat twice as much as an obese person and work half as hard and still not gain weight, it may not make sense but it does happen. There are other factors at play that have caused the obesity epidemic. How about genetics, could that be factor in the predisposition to be obese? I read in a study that pollution may even contribute to obesity due to it’s effect on our hormones. How about sleep? Sleep deprivation may be a contributing factor to obesity.
All in all obesity should come down to personal responsibility. However those of us who are obese do not need a constant reminder from others. We know we are fat. Comments as such do not help and may be harmful to some. One issue that may lead to overeating is low self esteem. If I am already self conscious about my weight the name calling by the insecure does not help. So if you are one of the people who chooses to insult the obese keep in mind you may be a contributing factor of What causes obesity. I am not saying that there should be special treatment for people that are obese, just that they should be treated as what they are human beings.
